Thonon Les Bains €25
Thonon Les Bains or Thonon for short, is a large picturesque town on the shore of Lac Leman (Geneva) and really offers something for everyone.
The town centre is pedestrianised with main stream and specialised shops, it also has large open squares bordered with plenty of cafes and restaurants.
Away from Thonon’s centre there is the amazing harbour (Port de Rives). With its medieval buildings, funicular railway and views across Lac Leman towards Lausanne in Switzerland which must be seen to be believed.
Take a walk down to the harbour and it feels as though you have arrived on the Mediterranean coast, with its many restaurants and lake views. From the port, you can board a passenger ferry to Lausanne in Switzerland.
At the far end of the port you will find the Plage Municipal. Offering a unique space for sport, relaxation and leisure, in an exceptional site amidst pine trees and a three-hectare park. It has 3 heated swimming pools including an Olympic 50m pool, lake swimming, 4 diving boards at 1.50, 3, 5 and 10 metres high, a 100-metre waterslide, children’s pool and play area.
Other facilities include playgrounds, beach volleyball, table tennis, water games and activities for children.
Another main attraction within walking distance from the town centre and port is the Chateau de Ripaille.
Chateau Ripaille is one of the most notable places of history, nature and beauty in the area.
The Chateau is the former residence of the Dukes of Savoie and a Carthusian monastery in the Middle-Ages. In 1892, the Chateau was bought by an industrialist and art lover, called Frédéric Engel-Gros. He restored the chateau, its historic buildings, gardens and large park.
Today Chateau Ripaille is a private residence open to the public and produces famous AOC wine.
